The Last Ten Percent Decides How It Looks

Someone spends three weekends cutting careful joints, then finishes the piece on Sunday evening with a thick coat of varnish brushed straight from the tin onto unsanded wood. The result has drips down one side, a fuzzy texture, and blotchy dark patches — and looks like something made in a garage, which is unfair to three weekends of good work.

Finishing is where beginner projects most often fall down, and almost all of it comes from two habits: rushing the surface preparation and applying coats too thick.

Sanding Is Most of the Job

Finish doesn’t hide surface defects; it magnifies them. Every scratch, every glue smear, every mill mark becomes more visible once there’s a film reflecting light off the surface.

Work through the grits in order and don’t skip. A typical sequence is 80 (only if the surface genuinely needs levelling), then 120, 150, and 180. Each grit’s job is to remove the scratches left by the previous one — jumping from 80 straight to 180 leaves deep scratches that the fine paper can’t reach, and they’ll appear the moment finish goes on.

Stopping point depends on the finish. For most film finishes, 180 grit is plenty; going to 320 can actually make it harder for finish to key to the surface. For oil finishes, going finer — 220, sometimes beyond — produces a smoother feel because there’s no film to level things out.

Always finish by sanding with the grain. A random orbit sander leaves small swirl marks that are invisible on bare wood and painfully obvious under finish, particularly on stained pieces. A final pass by hand with the grain at your last grit removes them.

Vacuum, then wipe with a slightly damp cloth or a tack rag. Dust left on the surface gets embedded in the first coat, giving a gritty texture that no amount of extra coats will fix.

The Glue Trap

Squeezed-out glue that has dried on the surface seals the wood locally. Stain and oil can’t penetrate there, so it shows as a pale ghost around every joint — usually only discovered after the finish goes on, which is far too late.

Two ways to avoid it: wipe squeeze-out with a damp cloth while it’s still wet and repeat until nothing more comes off, or let it cure to a rubbery state — about thirty to sixty minutes with typical PVA — and pop it off cleanly with a chisel or scraper. Either works; ignoring it does not.

Before finishing, wipe the whole piece with mineral spirits or denatured alcohol. It temporarily darkens the wood the way finish will, showing up glue spots, missed scratches, and swirl marks while they’re still fixable.

Choosing a Finish Without Overthinking It

Wipe-on oil/varnish blends (Danish oil, “wiping varnish”, thinned polyurethane). The easiest possible starting point. You apply with a rag, wait a few minutes, wipe off the excess, and repeat. It’s nearly impossible to get drips or brush marks because there’s no film thick enough to run. The trade-off is modest protection and several coats to build up. For a beginner’s first pieces, this is almost always the right answer.

Polyurethane (brushed). Tough, water-resistant, good for tabletops and anything that takes abuse. It’s also the least forgiving to apply — brush marks, drips, and dust nibs all show. Thin it by roughly ten percent, use a good brush, apply thin coats, and sand lightly between them.

Shellac. Dries in under an hour, smells pleasant, sands beautifully, and can be repaired invisibly by dissolving the existing coat with new application. Not water- or alcohol-resistant, so it’s poor for a dining table and excellent for a bookshelf. Also the classic sealer coat under other finishes.

Water-based polyurethane. Low odour, dries fast, stays clear rather than adding warmth. That last point cuts both ways: it keeps maple and ash looking pale and modern, and it makes walnut and cherry look slightly lifeless compared to an oil-based finish.

Hardwax oil. Popular for floors and increasingly for furniture. Penetrates rather than building a thick film, feels natural, and repairs locally without stripping the whole surface.

Thin Coats, Always

The single most common beginner error is trying to achieve full protection in one heavy coat. Thick coats sag on vertical surfaces, dry slowly, trap solvent, and stay soft underneath for weeks.

Three thin coats beat one thick one every time — better levelling, faster curing, and a harder final result. With wipe-on finishes this is nearly automatic; with brushed finishes it takes discipline.

Between coats, once dry, scuff lightly with 320 or 400 grit paper or a fine abrasive pad, then remove all dust. This knocks down dust nibs and gives the next coat something to grip.

Staining, and the Blotching Problem

Pine, cherry, birch, and maple stain unevenly. Their density varies within the board, so some areas absorb far more pigment than others, producing a patchy result that looks like a mistake because it more or less is one.

The fix is a pre-stain conditioner or a thin coat of dewaxed shellac applied first, partially sealing the thirsty areas so the stain lands more evenly. Apply it, wait the recommended time, then stain.

Test everything on a scrap offcut from the same board — not a different piece of wood, not the underside of the project. Colour on a chart bears little relationship to colour on your specific timber.

Also worth saying plainly: much of the time, no stain at all is the better choice. Walnut, cherry, and oak have colour worth showing, and a clear oil finish deepens it dramatically.

Curing Takes Longer Than Drying

“Dry to touch” is not “ready to use.” Most oil-based finishes are touch-dry in hours, handleable in a day, and fully cured in one to four weeks. A tabletop put into service after two days will take dents and print marks from anything left on it.

Give a heavily used surface a week before real use and a month before putting anything heavy on it permanently. That patience is invisible in the finished piece — and completely visible in the one where it was skipped.
